CUSTOM 0*F NUNATAK RAKU

When you want to cut the weight of your winter gear, you have to start thinking outside of the box. That is exactly how Tom at Nunatak works. He has developed an integrated system designed to cover all your needs with regards to sleeping and camp insulation.

The way this works is pretty straight forward. The Raku is a center zip sleeping bag with the capability of being used as a full body insulating garment. This "conversion" is achieved by adding a pair of sleeves to the bag and also allowing the footbox to be completely opened via a drawstring.

To use the Raku as a sleeping bag (3rd picture from the top), pull the sleeves into the main body and tighten the drawstring to cinch the footbox closed. You now have a fully functional sleeping bag.

To use the Raku for mobile insulation (4th picture from the top), pull the arms out of the main body and loosen the drawstring to open up the footbox. Put the Raku on just as you would a winter jacket and step through the zipper opening so your feet extend out the bottom. Next, pull the bottom up and and tighten the drawstring so that the bottom does not touch the floor. Depending on the level of activity or desired warmth, you can adjust how far the Raku will drape over your legs. For pitching a tent or walking, it is best to have it around your waist, but for lounging around camp, leaving it longer will keep the cold out better. If your hands get cold, simply stick them between the two layers.

In the last picture, I have the Raku folded in a way that exposes the liner fabric on the inside. I use it like this because I find it easier to get in and out, however, the inner fabric is much more fragile then the outer so care must be taken. If you are in bad weather or walking through a forest, it is best to fold the Raku the other way which would leave the Epic material exposed to handle the elements.

Description: A hybrid sleeping bag/insulating garment. This system is made to order and rated to 0*F (-20*C). The Raku is a standard product, however I customized it with following alterations: Size long, black Epic outer material, increased the baffle height to 3.5", add 4" differential cut, ~13 ounces of overfill, and an oversized draft collar.

Weight: 56.4 oz (3.525 lbs)
